In Oregon, and a select few other states across the country, Medicare Supplement enrollees have the opportunity to switch their Medigap plans from one carrier to another following what’s called the Oregon Birthday Rule.
With the Oregon Birthday Rule, people on a Medicare Supplement (or Medigap) have 30 days before their birthday to 30 days after their birthday every year to change carriers!
Why is this important? Well, because each year, Medicare Supplement rates tend to increase, so after many years of rate increases, the premiums can become quite high. The Oregon Birthday Rule gives folks the opportunity to “shop around,” so to speak, for a cheaper plan that covers all of the same things!
