In our last article, we gave a brief synopsis as to what Medicare Part A is, and, this week, we’re going to talk about–you guessed it–Part B! If you missed our overview of Part A, you can find that HERE!
Briefly, Parts A and B are part of Original Medicare (which you can read about on our Original Medicare page). While Part A covers Hospital care, Part B is going to cover your doctor visits. In general, it covers your medically necessary preventative care as well as supplies needed. Let’s take a deeper dive.
Preventative Services
Visits to the doctor in which the aim is to check on health and catch any issues in their early stages.
Ambulance Services
Medically necessary ground transportation to the nearest hospital. In some cases, there may be coverage for air transport, but that can be extremely limited.
Clinical Research
Clinical research may include different types of tests and/or procedures for an illness. Original Medicare may cover this as well as visits to doctors office and testing facilities for these tests and procedures.
Outpatient Prescription Drugs
Typically, Part B will cover a limited number of drugs that must be taken at the doctor’s office. This generally will not include prescriptions you take or inject on your own outside of the doctor’s office (that would be covered under Part D–prescription drug coverage).
Durable Medical Equipment
Part B may cover specific medically necessary medical equipment such as canes, pumps, and lifts. For a complete guide to what may be covered, please check this page.
Oxygen Equipment
Part B includes coverage for rented oxygen equipment, and the durable medical equipment (mentioned above) that you may need to use it.
